Better than anything you have now

Review Date: January 30, 2010
Reviewer: B. Miller,
Don't waste your life worrying about which LCD is better than the others. Get either a Samsung or a Sony and you won't be disappointed. Once you get it in your house, it will look a thousand times better than your prior TV, so just pull the trigger and be done with it. The High Def channels are amazing but it does have some issues with black on black, make some adjustments until you see what you like.
Sony Bravia XBR KDL-46XBR6 tv

Review Date: January 6, 2010
Reviewer: C. radke,
I purchased this tv because of its beautiful color and sharp images. However within a few months the LCD panel went, leaving me with no picture except for broad bands of solid vertical colors. We brought it to a Platinum Sony authorized repair shop and a new panel was inserted. The tv was returned to us in 4 weeks. Now the exact part, the LCD panel, has to be replaced again for the very same problem, only this time it is no longer in warranty. The repair cost to replace the panel for the second time is quoted at $1,995 for the actual part and then $395 added on for labor. To get our tv back, the repair costs will be greater than the the total price of what we paid for the actual brand new tv. Sony headquarters will not assist in the cost of the new replacement LCD panel even though the tv panel needs replacement for the second time! We not only still owe $1200 on our credit card for the original purchase, we will now have to pay $2,395 to repair it while still paying on the original purchase bill. Shame on Sony for not honoring a warranty on the replaced part. Buyers beware!!!!!! It is indeed a beautiful tv but should it break, such as the main LCD panel... watch out. The tv repair will cost more than the actual tv!

I had originally planned to get a Panasonic plasma 50 inch. I had 3 sony's before and all had great pictures and i didn't want risk getting less quality. In came the46 XBR. I bought it as a floor model and saved a ton of money. I hooked it up in 10 minutes. The picture at first was great but it was very dim. I called sony the next day and they said to turn off the light sensor. POW. The picture went from great to incredible. It was bright, sharp, and 3D like. Cable is terific and Blue Ray's are stunning. I put in I Robot and the images looked like I was on the movie set watching it get filmed. The sound is great and sounds like you are in the threatre.

Awesome product. Wait for Christams or Thanks giving deals. I got this TV and Sony BDP 550 for $1800 during 08 Christmas at Amazon. Also check xbr 9. Usually 46" and higher have better specifications than smaller size models. Use Amazon Bravia comparison chart for further analysis.

Great picture however it has gone to pot after 17 months.

No help from Sony. I did not purchase the extended warranty. I thought SONY would be a reliable product. WRONG

Never again. The tv has a severe ghost image when turned on and it is getting worse week by week.

Be careful when buying Sony LCD TV

Review Date: March 2, 2010
Reviewer: Jane,
I bought this Sony LCD TV set at 2008 Christmas. It was excellent in picture and sound, seemed to be better than Samsung LCD TV. Meanwhile, just 2-3 months after the one year warranty, it was found that there was a 2-or-3-pixel-wide vertical line, about 2 inches from the left brim, and from the top to bottom brim, presenting in the screen when watching TV programs, DVD, and BlueRay, which were suspected to be dead pixels. The software was updated to sony_dtv_package206r.p08 but the line was still there. SONY support office told me that this might be caused by TV brocasters! And I need to bring it to repair if it presists after hiding "broadcaster noise" attempts, while the cost won't be covered by SONY as the warranty has expired.

In brief, if you want to watch the TV just for one year, then buy it. Otherwise, think twice!
BIG BLACK line after 14 months of use - Sorry NO warranty!

Review Date: January 27, 2010
Reviewer: J. Acheson, IA United States
Oh NO, my beautiful SONY, true branded SONY... big black line down the screen. Oh the horror and dismay! I received this LCD TV in October 2008 as a 10 year anniversary present. We bought it from Amazon Warehouse Deals. I had to kick in some of my own money to up the brand to a Sony. After a little over 1 year, it developed a big black line down from the top to the bottom of the screen in the RED spectrum only. Green and Blue are fine. But when red shows up on the TV, a big black "burned out pixel line" shows very prominently. So I thought, well, there goes the $1400 we spent on this TV. NOT MY BEAUTIFUL SONY! But alas, after all I could do, no fixing the black line. The Sony authorized service folks told me the LCD panel would need to be replaced and that cost more than to just go buy a new TV. I also called Sony and they told me I would be on my own to get it repaired (again told that the cost of repairs is more than the cost of the TV brand new).

So, $1400 for 14 months of Sony TV use... amounts to $100 a month rental fee and Mother Earth and the trash dump takes one on the chin for another disposable piece of electronic wizardry.

Yes the TV still works, yes one could live with the black line down the TV side but for me every time I watch TV, that line stares at me and I think about nothing but "Dang, this was supposed to be a SONY!"

So, I cannot recommend this product even though for the 1 year it looked beautiful. Unless you buy an GIANT extended warranty, it is wicked to buy a TV and have it last only 1 to 3 years. My 1991 Sony Trinitron still works perfect. My how the brand has suffered over the years. So sad and disappointing.

On the plus side, now I have an excuse to go get a much bigger TV. Maybe this time I will try Samsung... with a MASSIVE extended warranty!
Vertical Lines**Sony Refuses to Acknowledge!!!

Review Date: January 8, 2010
Reviewer: Stacie Riley, SOUTHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, US
Had this tv 18 months and now there are vertical lines on the screen. Been researching and this seems to be a common issue with other folks that have bought this tv around the same time I did. Called Sony and they are no help at all. Have checked into having tv fixed, and price quotes are in the $1,500 range....That is horrible,,,I could buy a new one for less!!! Very upset and filing a complaint with the BBB.

18 months and it bites the big one

Review Date: March 18, 2010
Reviewer: Edward W. Oneill,
I purchased this television 18 months ago and the light panel is acting up already. In fact it must be replaced. Repairing it is not an option. The cost of a light panel is more than 75% of the cost of a new television. I've owned Sony televisions my entire adult life but I'll not buy another.
Great when it works

Review Date: October 26, 2009
Reviewer: Eugene A. Lewis,
This is our first LCD TV. It has great resolution and the HD is very impressive. It has served us well with many hours of viewing and Wii entertainment fun. We purchased this TV on the Memorial Day weekend of 2009. On Sunday morning September 27, 2009, my son turned on the TV to watch Sid the Science Kid but the picture and sound never appeared.
Sony customer support scheduled a pickup after an unsuccessful diagnostic walk through. It's been almost a month since the TV was taken by the Sony service center representative. Bottom line, we are not sure what to expect from a four month old TV that's been in the shop for almost a month.
black cloud, bad picture, unusable tv set

Review Date: September 16, 2009
Reviewer: Marius C. Constantinescu, Seattle. WA
I have purchased my 46" Bravia KDL-46S4100 about 16 months ago.Just after manufacturer warranty expired, the LCD panel started to get a shaky black cloud in the center of the screen and then horizontal stripes distorting the image. I have to wait more than 30 minutes for the picture to clear off. Other than this problem the picture is crisp, very good colors, easy to use controls, no general complains.
The authorized repair man came over to my house and cost estimation for the repair was over $1800, more than I have paid for the new tv set. I had to turn down the repair offer, now I need to scrap the tv and get a new one, which definitely will not be Sony again. They lost me as a customer. Recommend buying extended warranty for Sony products.
Lower End Model Gives Lower End Results

Review Date: June 13, 2009
Reviewer: S. Turner, Chicago, IL
I'm well aware that this Bravia model is their lower end one and used more as a discount choice. I know it's not going to have the newest technology or the fastest speeds. But I do expect some form of quality when factoring in the price and the Sony name that I've always felt stood for a quality product.

The problem I have is some massive backlight bleeding. Even turned to its minimum I get the splotches in the corners and near the middle when the screen is dark. Now I expect this kind of stuff from a no-name company being sold at a huge discount at Wal-Mart. But Sony has built a reputation as a major brand and I don't expect these kind of glaring issues. I'll try and have it repaired with the 1-year warranty, but it seems like this is an issue on this model that is quite common.

The TV functions and and it's a good picture for the price (when not dark). But the backlight issue is bad and just something I don't expect at this price tag. One positive is that the speakers that come with this model are exceptional and the best I've ever had from a television.

After 3 years, still outstanding set

Review Date: September 18, 2009
Reviewer: Desert Rat,
I bought this in 2006 and it is still an excellent TV. Initially I had to spend some time tweaking the colors, but once done, the HD pictures are amazing. It just occurred to me that I had not reviewed it, so just mention this as there has been no trouble or problems whatsoever in this three-year period.

OK, I'll admit that changing through the inputs to get to the DVD, and then back to the TV does go a bit more slowly than one would like, but that is the only criticism I have.

BTW, I just got the amazing Logitech Harmony One universal remote, which eliminates the changing of inputs. When set up, one button automatically turns on the TV, selects the right input, and turns on the DVD player. Likewise, back to playing TV.

This a great TV for the money, and as usual, Sony has done well.
Going strong after 18 months

Review Date: August 15, 2009
Reviewer: J. Morris, Durham, NC USA
This has been a great TV and I've never regretted the decision to buy it. It did have a few problems in the first few months, but I blame that on the delivery people (box looked like it went through a war zone). Sony reps fixed it quickly (component on main board came loose) and it's been great ever since.

I use it only as a monitor on HDMI for my home theater setup (don't to off air stuff or mess with any other inputs). Image quality is top notch for 720p. Even standard definition images look natural instead of pixelated like the other brands. The graphics engine does a fantastic job rendering things correctly regardless of the mode.

I'm still happy after all this time and would do it again.
This TV should not be SONY

Review Date: October 5, 2007
Reviewer: OneClick, Irving, Tx (USA)
I am using sony since 10 years and after purchasing my KDL-46s2010 then I changed my mind.

I purchased this TV MAy 17, 2007. After using 3 months I am seeing the alien picture on the screen. The color is displaying only in green,, Not able to see clear picture on the screen. Contacted sony and the customer service was great. They arranged local specialist to take a look. They are still working on it ( 4 weeks as of now) i am still waitng to fix the issue from Sony.

it has only one HDMI port; which means, you can either get HD reception from your Cable or Satellite antenna, or your DVD player, or Camcorder. To get around it, you have to unhook one, and hook the other one, every time; it is very inconviniant and unpleasant.

The picture quality is OK, not that great I compare with Samsung or Sharp..Sharp and Samsung provide much better quality, brightness, and speed. the TV freezes; or a big portion of screen turns into Chess type squares with fuzzy colors.

Final conclusion.. SONY is junk.. I would not recommend this to anyone
"Don't pay big bux for 1080p while this one is still available!"

Review Date: July 7, 2007
Reviewer: Jerry Parks, Lexington, KY USA
Wow! I thought it looked good in the store, but when I got it home....!
While Sony and Samsung lead the field right now, you can forget the 1080p hype. This thing is amazing! Pick one up if you find it at a good price because it will be phased out, no doubt. Nothing to add that hasn't already been said, except to say that if you take the time to tweak it, I cannot image a finer picture on digital HD. My easy chair is about 12 feet away, and this is just about the perfect size. SD channels are not quite as good as on old fashioned TV, but the future will probably take care of that. Again, if you're debating paying the extra money for 1080p, right now, forget it. This is so sharp and bright LOTR on upconverted DVD will make you dizzy!
Think before you buy SONY

Review Date: July 4, 2007
Reviewer: Manucci-michael Kamali, Beverly Hills, CA, USA
I have been a faithful SONY customer all my life (TV, Computer, Laptop, Camera, Home Theatre, etc) until I bought my latest KDL-46S2000; then things changed.

For starter, it has only one HDMI port; which means, you can either get HD reception from your Cable or Satellite antenna, or your DVD player, or Camcorder. To get around it, you have to unhook one, and hook the other one, every time; it is very inconviniant and unpleasant.

The picture quality is OK, but I compare that to my Sony Tube TV, and not with similar LCD HD TV's in the same price range; if compared with others, Panasonic and Samsung provide much better quality, brightness, and speed. Speed? Yes, speed. When you watch an action movie, sports, or any fast moving TV program, the TV freezes; or a big portion of screen turns into Chess type squares with fuzzy colors.

I know I have been a loyal customer of SONY, but looking at this product, I know I would have had a much better TV if I were looking at other brands. And that's what I will do the next time I buy any electronic product.

Good TV with some nice features.

Review Date: May 17, 2010
Reviewer: A. Romero, Northern, Cali
I have had this tv for about a month and i would have to say that i am pleased with my purchase.
The presence sensor is a nice feature to the tv however, the angles the sensor uses are not very good at times especially when you are watching the tv from the sides and not directly in front of the set. At times while watching HD the sound will sputter by cutting off and on, for this i change the channel and come back to the sound restored. I don't know if there is any updates using a USB for this particular set to fix any problems, other than that a good set, with the 120hz making a nice difference to watching movies however, it does make CGI movies look very computer animated.
I Love this TV

This is the forth Sony TV I have purchased in the past 20 years and all four have been exceptional for both picture and sound quality. I have had this one for a little over a week now and the picture is amazing. I can't wait until DirecTV gets to the house this week to hook up the High Def. I may not leave the couch, EVER!

This baby worked perfectly right out of the box. I didn't have to make any color adjustments at all. I was also impressed with the delivery arranged by Amazon. The delivery man stayed with me as we removed the set from the box, inspected it for damages, and made sure the set powered up. He even helped me move the set to the bedroom. This was a gift to my wife, and she loves the picture quality, as do I. I'm seriously considering buying another, to replace a large screen projection set that has nothing wrong with it. I connected the Sony to a stereo system, but we rarely use it. The internal speakers work just fine. You can't go wrong with this Sony.
Watch out.......

Be warned. This TV has a problem with the motherboard. The USB patch they send you to correct the various issues, does not work. I purchased two of them and luckily was able to return them for a full refund. The sound drops out, the video signal drops out, the screen flashes and the patch made the picture blurry. I ended up purchasing two Samsung LED TV's which are just great for the same price I paid for the two Sony's. You don't need these problems after spending a couple of grand thinking you are getting a quality product. I cannot stress to you more, stay away from these TV's no matter the price.
My first HDTV :)

Reviewer: K. Paramkusham, SOUTH PORTLAND, ME, US
This is a great TV.

I bought this as a bundle deal with PS3 slim a month ago and I am loving it so far. This is my first HDTV.
Picture Quality is good.I got some calibration settings from CNET, after adjusting to those settings my TV got the best color, contrast. Now it is simply life like. You have a setting called 'theatre' where it smooths the picture.
According to specifications Sony LCD 46 inches uses a max of 160 watts.

This TV got some eco-friendly features which I think might be a Sony's publicity factors.

This TV got 4 HDMI outputs. One of the cool feature is you can use TV remote to control PS3 but please note you need to use HDMI cable. And another cool feature is TV will automatically detect if you have something connected to input and all other will not be highlighted.so when you want select you don't have to scroll all of them.
Another impressive feature is sound, I thought the sound will be very poor but it is not bad as I thought. It can easily manage a large room. You can live with it if you are tight on budget for buying home theater system.

What I don't like:
None

Overall, this is a great tv and I defnitely recommend it.

UPDATE - 3/3/2010
I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is one of my best buy :)

Don't understand why e1 keeps saying this TV is pricey. Just purchased one yesterday from Best Buy who was running a special to get rid of their Sony surround sound units with wires. For the TV AND Blue Ray Player & Sony surround sound, including PA's 6% sales tax, it was $1670. Now that is not cheap. But it's not out of hand compared to other TV's and packages. I hope it lasts as long as the Sony Console that we purchased in 1989 for $999.

Pro's

-Amazing picture in gaming and 1080p blu-ray quality video
-Matte screen, extremely helpful in preventing glare
-multitude of methods to adjust picture settings, even though the picture looks amazing right out of the box.
-Speakers are adequate
-Price is sweet considering this is still one of the best tv's of all time.
-Get full 18 month warranty
-Motion processing does its job well, and works well in fast action.

Cons
-Menu system has shown its age compared to the newer models, but its a minor issue
-SD, 720p, and 1080i broadcasting can look horrible on this tv, as well as any other lower quality video or gaming, such as the playstation 1 or 2 but thats not the tv's fault. (just thought you should know)
-This tv is pretty thick, and there might be people who don't like that, but it doesn't bother me.
-A lot of useless features that i didn't find useful, such as looking at pictures, and streaming music (but you need an Ethernet cable and modem to be able to do it)

Now the top question you all are thinking.

Is the tv worth the money?, the answer is hell yes. for being 2008 model it is better than any LED tv on the market today.

First off, OneCall and Conway delivery were excellent to deal with. As someone stated before in a previous review, I received an email, then a follow-up call after purchasing from Amazon. No problems with shipping either. Now for the TV... Back in December of last year, I had purchased a Vizio (551XVT) from Costco. I had that TV for 3 months, then returned it because it had "shadowing" on the screen. Basically, there was a blemish in the middle of my 55" that I couldn't tolerate since I shelled out 2K. It was a good TV, not great. I then decided to try an LG (55LH90) which was also a good TV, even better than the Vizio. I decided I was going to keep that until I saw this TV drop in price dramatically. Both of the previous Tv's had the local dimming/backlit like this one, but the difference is Sony's red, green and blue bulbs that I think make a difference in picture quality. Everyone's taste is different and people will tell you that their TV rivals anyone else's...blah,blah,blah. I'm not one to go and brag about a purchase, but I will tell you to check this TV out as it is worth the price. It's two years old, but I can tell you it's as good as the LCD's/ Plasmas that are coming out today. I researched mainly LCD's because glare is an issue in my living room. No problem there as this TV has a matte screen. Ironically, I was looking at the new models this year and many of them have the ultra-clear panel, which is glossy. I think the 3-d Tv's are nice, but to me, if I'm going to watch 3-D, it will be in a theater, not in my home. Plus, there isn't much content out right now to justify dropping 3-4k. Once I got this TV hooked up and got the settings to my liking, I was very impressed and happy that I waited. It probably won't be in stores anymore as it is 2 years old. But, see for yourself, read all the other reviews and go to CNet too as they gave this TV a really good score. I am very picky and don't have any quams about returning products if their not up to my standards. I ordered this blindly and would definately recommend it. PS3 and Hi-Def are gorgeous...

Purchased this TV from Sixth Avenue Electronics through AMAZON. Of course, dealing with AMAZON was easy and flawless as usual. I love using AMAZON! The TV arrived early and with everything needed for a quick set up. Worked perfectly from minute one. I really like Samsung because they make things simple and easy to use and also have excellent quality. Price was $40 lower than anywhere else. Kudos to 6th Avenue. Awesome!

I got this TV for our basement for the Wii that we just purchased as we have a 55 inch DLP upstairs for our normal viewing. The reason why we got a lower end LCD was 1 price, 2 it wasn't going to be our everyday TV to watch so I wasn't quite as concerned with the picture quality, and 3 we wanted to mount it on the wall so that we would not have issues with hitting it with our Wii remotes. The picture quality is great with the Wii and is good for TV. I would recommend this TV for someone that isn't going to use it as their primary TV. If they were buying a primary TV I would suggest spending more and getting a 1080p as you can see the difference in picture quality. Again though, this TV delivered on why I got it and didn't disappoint one bit.

Awesome T.V.! I'm very pleased with the picture quality. Maybe the only slight problem is the speakers are just O.K., but certainly not bad enough not to buy it. I think it's a great value.

Among the best at this size ...

Having worked previously as an electronics salesman, I have a working knowledge of HDTVs. I always recommended the Samsung models as "among the best," but never had seen one within a home and running as most consumers would. Until recently ...
My mother owns this model and has for a few weeks now. It's classy-looking with a glossy outer bezel and an oval stand (included). The TV itself seems larger than the competitors, simply because the speakers are located on the sides. This helps give a more natural-sounding stereo effect without the extra cost of a home theater system. It's just got a high-end, quality look to it. Samsung LCDs are renowned for having a top-notch viewing angle. This holds true with this model. Stand nearly 180° to the side, and the picture is still bright and clear. LCDs have come a long way in a few short years.
The remote is well-marked and easy to use. TV-accessed menus are simple and quick to navigate. My mother, not well-versed in knowledge of consumer electronics, was able to configure the settings herself with very little help.
Unlike lower-end competitors, though, this 3-series Samsung does not offer any separate composite hookups (the 3 red, white, and yellow plugs). One of the component hookups must be used in place. If you have, say, a DVD/VCR combo, Dish Network (non-HD), and a Nintendo Wii to all hookup, you're out of luck. There simply isn't room for more than 2 non-HD inputs. It can be annoying to have to repeatedly unplug and replug items into your new TV. If you plan on using at least one of the HDMI plugs, though, this problem is avoided. However, be aware that most direct competitors do offer more non-HD hookups.
For the price, you can find larger TVs. Big retailers are often willing to sell last year's models at cheaper prices (ie 720p TVs) because most people spending $700+ want the latest and greatest. If you just want a quality TV and you plan on using the HDMI hookups for true High Definition viewing, this is probably the best picture you'll find. I made sure my mom knew what to look for when she went shopping - and she agreed by getting this one.
Best of luck to you!
Fab!

Great TV once you update the firmware

Review Date: June 30, 2010
Reviewer: Jonathan R Makovec,
Don't have much to add other than it's a fantastic TV for the price. I've had mine for a little under 6 months now, and when I first brought it home I noticed only one main problem. There was some significant lag time before the TV would recognize a HDMI source. Not a huge deal, but it was definitely annoying. I looked online and saw this was a common problem but that Sony had addressed it with a firmware update. Sure enough, I compared the firmware version it came with (can view this in the menu screen) and what Sony had on their website as the latest and it was an older one. Easy enough to upgrade the firmware yourself as long as you have a USB flash drive. Directions were self explanatory and it worked like a charm. TV has been fantastic ever since. Only other knock on it is the speakers. I don't expect great sound from flat screens anymore, but the sound coming out of this is pretty decent. My issue is past a certain volume, I'd get some annoying frame vibration noises from heavy bass during movies. Recommend using a separate surround system for the audio with just about any TV anyway, which I do now.
love it great tv for the price

this tv is awesome its good on the pocket to, picture is great if u have hd sources regular sd channels look kinda grainy but i figured it was normal, only issue i have found is the software update you will need for the hd inputs they just stop working after time but you can call sony and they will send u a usb drive u just plug into your tv, i picked this tv up for 750 +tax not a bad investment i have a ps3 hooked through the hdmi and it looks awesome and the bravia sync is definetly cool to use with the ps3 i can use my tv remote on the ps3 with the sync, overall if your looking for a good tv for everyday watching/gaming i recomend this one...i gave it a 4 instead of 5 because the hdmi ports issue should have been resolved by sony instead of me figuring out what happened by researching it otherwise it would of gotten a 5
Excellent television

After years upon years of using a standard definition telvision, I decided to foray into the world of HDTV. I was on a budget, and this item not only delivered on budget, but also on quality!

My friend has a more expensive Bravia at his home, but there are virtually no differences from either of our sets of eyes. The only differences would be the lack of some features, such as Picture-in-Picture, and a couple other minor features I don't usually see many people use.

Blu-ray discs look sharp and beautiful, as do games. Blacks and colors look excellent. I feel like I am looking at a computer screen, and indeed, I can connect my computer to the television and use it as an extended monitor. It looks stunning when I do this.

3 HDMI inputs simplify use, though I am somewhat disappointed that Bravia link doesn't seem to work with my "fat" PS3. But it's not a deal-breaker.

For under $1000, this television is definitely worth a purchase if you have some extra cash laying around and are looking to jump into the world of HD!
Excellent Quality, Excellent Price

Did tons of research before deciding on this 46" model. Video quality is superb, does excellent is most all scenarios, ok in low light scenarios. For those of us that want the video image to look a very specific way, the settings menu is very intuitive, and does lend one to go into a great deal of manual adjustments. For those out there who are a little Tech challenged, fear not, very, very easy pre-set settings are available, and TV works fine right out of the box. Audio is good not great, but to be fair this is true for almost every HD TV, especially in this price range for a 46". I've have not owned this set long enough to rate durability, but based on my experience with Sony products, I'm not losing any sleep over any potential issue, we all know Sony makes quality electronics. Still very excited about the purchase, verify satisfied customer. Will update review if anything changes, but as of right now, no hesitation in giving this TV 5 stars.
